Dane Wilson of FACS receives Memphis FCA
John “Bull” Bramlett Award
Dane Wilson of First Assembly Christian School was the recipient of the 2009 John “Bull” Bramlett Award presented by ServiceMaster Clean. The award was presented at this year’s FCA / AutoZone Liberty Bowl Prayer Breakfast on December 29, 2009, to the high school football player in the Shelby County area who best exemplified excellence on the field, as well as high character, integrity and godliness off the field.
The other five finalists were seniors Dexter Alexander of Manassas High School, Fred Flenorl, Jr. of Whitehaven High School, Austin Marshall of Evangelical Christian School and Tom McDow of Tipton-Rosemark Academy. Each of the five football standouts were highly recommended by their coaches and were very active in serving their church, school and community.
Wilson, the son of Michael and Dana Wilson, was a three-year starter at running back for FACS who rushed for over 1800 yards and a Memphis area-best 26 touchdowns as a senior. He was on the AutoZone Liberty Bowl High School All-Star Team and was voted by his teammates as a Team Captain. Dane is an honor student and FACS’ Philip Spain Award recipient, in recognition of his outstanding play and Christ-like attitude. He is actively involved at First Assembly of God, where is in the youth worship band and handles media and sound for youth services and church sanctuary productions. Dane has served as a counselor for Royal Family Kids Camp and as a tutor for underprivileged children at 2 different elementary schools. He has also served St. Jude patients at Target House. Said Coach Don Purvis:“His accomplishments speak for themselves, but what truly makes Dane so special cannot be kept on a stat sheet. Dane has remained quietly consistent as a Christian leader of our team for the last three years…he is a talented young man with a true heart for Christ and unwavering faith.”
John “Bull” Bramlett was an all-pro NFL linebacker after a distinguished playing career at the University of Memphis (then Memphis State). He is currently a renowned speaker who travels the country addressing sports teams, students, and other groups about the dramatic turnaround in his life after his encounter with the gospel.
